Stealing the show
Not many can do it. In fact I can only think of Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movie and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean who have done it.
When it comes to the wrestling business, especially the WWE, stealing the show is even harder – considering the amount of talent generally on show every night.
Stealing the show on your debut?
I have been watching WWE/WWF for a long time now and have seen the debuts of innumerable performers – HHH, Rock, Edge, Jericho, Kurt Angle, Cena, Orton, Batista, Goldberg, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Kane, Shield, Wyatt Family etc etc etc.
None of them had spectacular debuts.
Kevin Owens (Steen) did.
A 31 year old fatman with a beer belly -who, for the majority of his 15 year old career, has been performing in front of audiences of 50 or 100 in small towns – went to a WWE pay per view event and defeated the WWE’s alpha male – John Cena.
As per Vince McMahon’s legendary blueprint of wrestlers, top babyfaces needed to be tall, handsome, muscular, fair, preferably blond (Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Ultimate Warrior, HHH, Rock, Edge, Chris Jericho).
His disgust for fat people knows no bounds – just think of the treatment meted out to Mick Foley, Vader, Bastion Booger, Bam Bam Bigelow, Mabel/Viscera, Blue Meanie etc.
Kevin Owens is fat, has a beerbelly, is not very handsome, isn’t blond, isn’t muscular and isn’t very tall. He would have been destined for a mid card career, forever losing to the top dogs, like so many before him.
But Owens kept at it at independent circuits around North America and he never gave up, never stopped dreaming and working hard.
He kept on fighting and that caught the attention of HHH who brought him to WWE.
And we know what happened next.
Fight Owens Fight – the three words became a worldwide phenomenon overnight – mainly because of the defeat of the posterboy of Never Give UP.
And that’s really ironic, because Never Give Up is more or less Kevin Owen’s lifestory.
HHH has unearthed another gem – let’s hope Vince doesn’t butt in and ruin it for everybody.
In the meantime, Fight Owens Fight.
