When Life Gives You Potatoes

The times are hard.

Unemployment is at an all time high – though that is because everybody is getting trained on how to become a manager, and nobody is getting trained on how to work.

We are slowly entering the zone where there are 100 managers for every worker.

And we all know how that will pan out.

So its becoming more and more important that people start thinking tangentially.

People have to be creative, people have to start their own ventures, people have to take risks

And that’s exactly what Alex Craig did.

Alex Craig started his own business and is now raking in the doubloons.

And he did it without an MBA, without employing managers and statisticians and analysts, he did it without holding focus groups.

He simply tapped into mankind’s primeval, primordial urge and lust.

Instead of wasting thousands on advertising and breaking his head on creating a need in the minds of consumers, he just tapped into a ‘want’ that is already present in every human being’s mind.

A want for potatoes

Let’s face it, there are only two things in life that unite us all – porn and potatoes.

You can never have too much porn.

And you sure as hell can never have too many potatoes.

For either $7.99 or $10.99 (large or medium) Alex Craig will write a personalized message on a potato for you and mail it to wherever. Just like Twitter you have 140 characters to write a personalized message on a potato and send it to anyone. The app developer by day came up with a business idea to send anonymous custom messages to whoever you want on a potato. Craig, 24, said he came up with the idea for Potato Parcel earlier this year while having dinner with his girlfriend. “She said, ‘You will not sell a single potato. This is the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard,’” Craig said. “On our second day that we were live, and we started promoting it on Reddit, and we got $2,000 in orders, and I just knew this was it.”

It’s a simple idea. Users go online and order a potato, ranging from $8 to $10, add a custom message, and send it anonymously. “This one says, ‘Congrats on Stanford, hope the surgery helps your golf game,’” Craig said, reading a message on a recent order. It’s also an idea that’s making money. Craig says he’s sold over 2,000 potatoes, and he’s clearing $10,000 a month in profit since he launched the site in May.

Let’s face it- this is a business idea that has gold written all over it.

Alex Craig is a business genius, a god amongst men.

After all when you are sad or sick or depressed or even when you are happy and joyous and celebrating, what is the one thing guaranteed to put a smile on your face?

A potato

Potatoes are love

Potatoes are life.
