Nobel for Bob Dylan

Let’s face it, the Nobel Prize people are just going around trolling humans for the Lolz.

Alfred Nobel had set up the prizes to be awarded “to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.”

The Prizes are given for achievements in physics, chemistry, literature “in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction”, medicine and physiology, peace “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”….. and for some odd reason that no one understands – Economics.

Now, physics, chemistry, medicine, physiology are all noble scientific fields that, without a doubt, benefit humanity. As these are highly scientific disciples, Cheapo, as a layman, has no right to comment on them.

Peace and literature, however, are a different matter altogether.

Look at that list, look at that list dear readers.

Check out the recipients in 1950, 1959, 1961, 1968, 1971, 1973 (glorious trolling), 1979, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994 (glorious trolling), 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2009, 2014 and 2016.

I am not criticizing any of the recipients’ intentions (except Kissinger, that fucker was a fucker and Arafat, who was a terrorist), but their actual impact.

Why the hell are the Nobel lot awarding failure?

Ralph Bunche – mediation in Palestine (great success right?)

Philip Noel-Baker – international peace

Alva Myrdal and Alfonso Garcia Robles – [for] their magnificent work in the disarmament negotiations of the United Nations, where they have both played crucial roles and won international recognition (huge success, right?)

Mikhail Gorbachev – nuff said

Arafat, Rabin and Perez – to honour a political act which called for great courage on both sides, and which has opened up opportunities for a new development towards fraternity in the Middle East – no comment necessary

Al Gore, Barack Obama – no comment neessary

Malala – for getting shot

Apart from a whole host of cases where the awardings are, lets face it, the equivalent of Indira Gandhi awarding herself the Bharat Ratna.

So, we have established the regular trolling for the peace prize.

It becomes more prominent when we realize who all have been nominated over the years.

Aye, Josef Stalin, Hitler, Fidel, Vlad the impaler, and Donald.

And of course, then there is this

So, apart from stupid idiots like my brother Fluffy McDildoface aka Gudduda the Imbecile, no one takes the Nobel Peace Prize seriously.

But, when it comes to literature, its a whole different ballgame.

This is serious business (although the Nobel lot seem to have a grand total of fuck all and diddly squat ideas when it comes to non Euro languages) and you can’t escape by giving the award to any Tom, Dick or Bob.

Well, the Nobel lot have gone into a Challenge Accepted mode here too.

(No idea about the non English recipients, so I will stick to the English (lang) lot)

We have Rudyard Kipling, WB Yeats, GB Shaw, Sinclair Lewis, John Gallsworthy, Eugene ONeill, Pearl S Buck, TS Elliot, William Faulkner, Bertrand Russell, Fatty Winston, Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Samuel Beckett, Patrick White, Saul Bellow, William Golding, Nadine Gordimer, Toni Morrison, Seamus Heaney, VS Naipaul, JM Coetzee, Harold Pinter, Dorris Lessing, Alice Munro and lastly, Bob.

Most would agree that most of these recipients are pretty damn good.

Well, apart from Fatty Winston of course.

The controversy comes from the ones who have not received the award.

  • Fyodor Dostoyevsky
  • Anton Chekov
  • Nikolai Gogol
  • Leo Tolstoy
  • Agatha Christie
  • JRR Tolkien
  • Stephen King
  • Lewis Carroll
  • Jules Verne
  • Mark Twain
  • George Orwell
  • Kurt Vonnegut
  • Douglas Adams
  • Enid Blyton
  • Terry Pratchett
  • Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo
  • Arthur Conan Doyle

According to the Nobel lot, none of these people deserve the Prize, but Bob Dylan does.

There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Bob Dylan is a legitimate bonafide great of the English music scene. He is right up there in the pantheon of the greatest.

Like a Rolling Stone, Times they are a Changing, Tambourine Man etc are some of the greatest songs ever and a symbol of the feelings and society and wish for change from status quo etc.

But in the 1960s.

Does Bob Dylan deserve the Nobel Prize in Literature?

Why the hell not?

Does he deserve it in 2016?

1960s absolutely, 1970 and 80s why not….but 2016 ummmm….?

In this millennium, strictly speaking, as the voice of a generation, Eminem is much much more relevant than Bob.

This award has got the distinct whiff of subjectivity and an effort to stay relevant and “cool” in it.

So here’s my suggestion.

If you really believe in the objective of the Nobel Prize, then you have to give it to someone who have actually had an impact in real life; someone who have done more for peace than anybody else; someone who have given more pleasure and hope to children worldwide, those who have shaped dreams and given hope.

Award the Nobel Peace Prize to FIFA

Award the Nobel Prize for Literature to Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Joe Simon, Wally Wood, Bill Everett, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Frank Miller, Alan Moore.
