ADVICE TO MOTHERS!—Are you broken in your rest by a sick
child suffering with the pain of cutting teeth? Go at once to a
chemist and get a bottle of MRS. WINSLOW’S SOOTHING SYRUP.
It will relieve the poor sufferer immediately. It is perfectly
harmless and pleasant to taste, it produces natural quiet sleep,
by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes “as
bright as a button.” It soothes the child, it softens the
gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regulates the bowels,
and is the best known remedy for dysentery and diarrhoea,
whether arising from teething or other causes. Mrs. Winslow’s
Soothing Syrup is sold by Medicine dealers everywhere at 1s. 1½d.
per bottle. Manufactured in New York and at 498, Oxford Street, London.

As you can see from the advertisements above, the syrup claimed to relieve children from pain and different ailments.
It was an “over-the-counter” preparation available in all medicine shops. It was widely marketed in the UK and the USA; the company used various media to promote their product, including newspapers, recipe books, calendars, and trade cards.
Mrs Winslow’s Soothing Syrup first appeared for sale in 1849 under Jeremiah Curtis and Benjamin A. Perkins of Bangor, Maine, USA. Mrs. Charlotte N. Winslow, Curtis’ mother-in-law, created the formula while she was a nurse caring for infants. In an 1868 court summary, Curtis reported selling more than 1.5 million bottles of the remedy annually.
The product became very popular as it was very effective.
The formula consisted of Morphine Sulphate (an opiate analgesic related to heroin), sodium carbonate (water softener), spirits foeniculi (an alcohol that seems to be only associated with this product), and aqua ammonia (a cleaning agent).
That’s right, even in the early parts of the 20th century, people in England and USA were giving morphine (Cheapo loves morphine, its the only stuff that takes away his pain) and alcohol to their babies.
So advanced, so scientific
This is why according to our left wing liberal intelligentsia,
